Sad news out of Austin as a flight nurse with the Travis County STAR Flight medevac helicopter fell to her death during a rescue Monday night. Kristin McLain, 46, a flight nurse with STAR Flight for 7 years, fell from the hoist as the crew was lifting her and a victim back into the helicopter. High winds at the time may have been a factor, and the NTSB is investigating. This is the first on-duty fatality in the 30 years of STAR Flight operations.

Sad to hear. We had one crash a few years ago here in IA, killing everyone onboard.

These medevac helicopters seem to crash with a higher regularity then other aircraft. And when they do, it’s always a particular tragedy because there is often a patient on board. Very sad.

This is true. We typically operate at lower altitudes and often to unprepared landing zones. Not to mention we usually operate 365/7/24. This leads to greater chances of incidents with Terrain, birds and wires. I can’t speak to this directly since my company doesn’t operate any a/c with lifts but its not a job for you if you’re looking for perfectly safe environments
